He described it to a friend once and heard how strange it sounded and never mentioned it again.
He said: I feel guilty about it. And his friend, reasonably, said: about what, you were not there. And he said, no, I know. And they talked about something else.
But it does not go. He is thirty seven and he has had this since he was about twenty nine, since a book, and it visits him about once a month and it always feels the same.
It is not a thought. If it were a thought he could argue with it, and he has tried, and the arguments all work and none of them touch it.
It is a physical thing. A weight in the chest and a wish to apologize to somebody, and both of those arrive whole and neither of them has anywhere to go, because the thing that happened, happened over centuries, involving people whose names he does not know, and everybody who could receive an apology has been dead for a very long time.
He has looked for something to do about it. He has genuinely looked, on and off, for eight years. There is nothing. There is no action attached.
And a guilt with no action attached is a strange object to carry around. Guilt is supposed to be a thing that moves you: you did something, you put it right, it lifts. This one just sits.
He said to himself in the car once: I do not know what this is for.
You know that weight.
Maybe yours arrives about something else entirely. Maybe you feel it about a country, or a family, or something a group you belong to did before you were born. Maybe you have never been able to say it out loud without somebody sensibly explaining to you that it is not your fault, which you already know, and which does not help.
Nobody put this in you and nobody is going to be able to argue it out. It is not irrational and it is not a symptom. It is a real response to a real thing.
It has simply been going under the wrong name.

The instruction is not what you think
Here is a very short line about how to be near other people's sorrow, and there is nothing in it about ownership.
Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.Romans 12:15
Weep with them that weep.
Not: weep for what you did. Not: establish your involvement first, and then weep in proportion.
It is an instruction to be in the same state as somebody else about their thing. It assumes, in fact it requires, that the sorrow being wept about is not your own, and it never asks anybody to justify their tears by explaining their part in the loss.
You have permission to weep about a thing that was never yours to cause, and Scripture puts that in one line without asking anybody for their credentials. That is what Romans 12:15 instructs, weeping alongside about somebody else's loss, and it is the Holy Spirit who produces that kind of sorrow in a person, which is why it arrives whole and cannot be argued away.
Now put the two things side by side.
Guilt says: I did something and I must put it right. Grief says: something was lost and I am sad about it. Those two feel almost identical in the chest, and they behave completely differently, and only one of them requires an action.
What has actually been happening for eight years
Yours has no action attached because it was never guilt.
It is grief. It has always been grief. And you have been filing it under guilt for eight years, and that is why it has been so unbearable, because a guilt you cannot discharge is a debt with no payment window and it just accrues.
You are carrying a sorrow rather than a debt, and nothing about it requires you to do anything. Scripture says blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted (Matthew 5:4), and it is the Holy Spirit who is the Comforter named in that promise, and He comes to people who are mourning rather than to people who have completed a task.
And nothing on this page says anybody was guilty of anything. You are not being told whose fault it was, and this site does not assign that in any direction. The word says judge nothing before the time (1 Corinthians 4:5), and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that a place to rest instead of an unanswered question, which is what lets a grief be a grief instead of an unfinished investigation.
Here is the turn, and it is a change of name and nothing else.
Call it grief.
Not guilt. Not responsibility. Not something you have to work out your position on. Grief, which is what you feel when a thing that should have been whole is not, whether or not you had anything to do with it.
You are grieving something real, and grief does not require an action to be legitimate. Scripture says weep with them that weep, and asks nobody for their part in the loss (Romans 12:15), and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that permission land in the chest rather than in the head, which is where the arguments have been failing for eight years.
And there is nothing you have to do about it. You have been released from a task that was never set, and there is no repair being asked of you. The word says he hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God (Micah 6:8), and read the size of that list, and His Spirit is the one who does the requiring, and He has not asked you to mend a century.
It will visit you again next month, probably. It has been coming for eight years and a page does not stop that.
It will just arrive with the right name on it.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, wherever you are sitting. The standing to speak this way is yours in Christ and it does not depend on anything you have or have not done. Scripture is the ground under it, the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely tidy, and what He does with the weight and when is His, however He answers.
- Weight in my chest, you are not guilt and you never were. The Word of God says weep with them that weep, and it asks nobody anywhere for their part in the loss before they are allowed to be sad. In the name of Jesus I call you grief today.
- Wish to apologize to somebody who has been dead for centuries, get out of this car. Scripture says judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a place to rest instead of an open file. There is no repair being asked of me and no task was ever set.
- Father, I have carried this for eight years and every argument against it worked and none of them touched it. Your word says blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted, and Your Spirit is the Comforter named in that promise. I am saying four words out loud tonight and I am adding nothing after them.
