Round A Family MealPsalm 23:5

I Cannot Sit At A Table Like That

This message is for the table you grew up at had words said over it every night and the house those words were said in was not a safe one, so the family table itself is the thing you cannot bear, and you have never worked out how to separate the two

He is fifty three and he can eat anywhere, and there is one shape of an evening that empties him out and he has never said why to anybody.

It is a certain kind of table. A family one, laid properly, everybody sitting, and somebody says something before the food and everybody waits.

He goes cold. Not a memory, exactly. Something older than a memory. He has been to four of those in the last two years and every single time he has been fine and pleasant and helpful and has come home and sat in the truck for twenty minutes before going in.

His wife has asked. He has said he is just tired.

Because the honest answer is a house he grew up in, where words were said over the table every night without fail, and where the man saying them was not a safe man to be in a room with.

That is all this page is going to say about that. It is not a page that opens a person up and leaves them there, and it is not going to ask him or you for details.

What it will say is what he worked out, at fifty three, in a truck: it was never the table. He has known that intellectually since he was about thirty.

And his body has not got the message in twenty three years.

You know that truck.

Maybe it is a table for you. Maybe it is a particular kind of room, or a certain phrase, or the sound of grace being said in a certain tone of voice. Maybe you cannot even be sure what triggers it and only know that some evenings you leave a good house feeling worse than you arrived.

None of this is a failure of faith and none of it is you being difficult. A body that learned something in a house it could not leave is doing exactly what a body is supposed to do.

And if what is under this is heavier than a page can carry, if you are frightened for yourself or for somebody in your house tonight, put this down and ring somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if anybody is in danger. That is not going around God. That is help He put in the world on purpose.

I Cannot Sit At A Table Like That

The most famous table in the book is not a safe room

Here is a line everybody knows, from a psalm everybody knows, and almost nobody reads where the table is being set.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.Psalm 23:5

In the presence of mine enemies.

That is not a warm farmhouse kitchen. That is a table laid in a place where the man sitting at it has every reason to be watching the door, and the psalm does not pretend otherwise and does not move him somewhere safer first.

The setting is not fixed. The trouble is still in the room. And a table gets laid anyway, and there is oil, and the cup goes over the edge.

You are at a table He prepares, and He does not require the room to be safe before He sets it. That is exactly what in the presence of mine enemies means in the verse it sits in (Psalm 23:5), and it is the Holy Spirit who is described as the Comforter, the one who comes and stands alongside, and He has never once asked a person to have finished healing before He would sit down with them.

The thing about your body

Now the practical part, because it helps to know what is happening rather than to be told to feel differently.

You have been treating this as a spiritual problem and it is partly a physical one. What happens to you at those tables is not doubt and it is not bitterness and it is not unforgiveness.

Something in you learned, very young, that a particular arrangement of a room predicted what was coming. That learning is deep and it is fast and it does not consult you, and it fires before any thought you might have about it has had time to get out of bed.

You have not been failing to forgive anybody, and what happens in you at those tables is not a verdict on your heart. Scripture says like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him. For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust (Psalm 103:13-14), and it is the Holy Spirit who applies that gentleness to a specific man in a specific truck, and He was not sitting in the passenger seat asking why this is not sorted yet.

And nothing here tells you to go back to that house, or to say anything to anybody, or to have a conversation, or to forgive on a schedule. Not one word of that.

You are not being handed a task, and nothing about your peace depends on a confrontation you have not chosen. The word says as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men (Romans 12:18), and there are two limits written into that sentence, and it is the Holy Spirit who does the work that lies outside them.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it does not involve that house or that man.

You are not required to reclaim the table you came from. That is what you have been quietly assuming the assignment was, and it is not the assignment and nobody set it.

There is another table. There have been several and you have sat at four of them in two years and left after twenty minutes in a truck.

You are being given a table that is not the one you came from, and sitting at it is not disloyalty and it is not pretending. Scripture says Thou preparest a table before me, present tense, in a room that has not been made safe (Psalm 23:5), and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that a real presence beside a man at fifty three, which is the only thing that has ever made a difficult room bearable for anybody.

And it may take years. You have not been slow, and twenty three years is not evidence of anything except how deep the thing went. The word says he healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds (Psalm 147:3), and binding is a slow work done in stages, and His Spirit is the one doing it, at whatever pace He works at and however He answers.

Next time there is a table like that, go if you want to and do not go if you do not.

If you go, you will just be at a table He set, and He knew exactly which house you came out of when He set it.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, wherever you are sitting. The standing to speak this way is yours in Christ and it is not issued on the strength of how healed you are. Scripture is the ground under it, the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely kind, and what He does with the memory and when is His, however He answers.

  1. Cold that comes over me at that table, you are not a verdict on my heart and you do not decide where I sit. The Word of God says Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies, so the room does not have to be safe before He lays it. In the name of Jesus I stay in the chair tonight.
  2. Voice that says twenty three years is too long and I should be over this, get out of this truck. Scripture says He knoweth our frame, He remembereth that we are dust, and the Holy Spirit is the one who applies that to a real man in a real cab. I have not been failing to forgive and this is not slowness in me.
  3. Father, that table had words said over it every night and the house was not a safe one. Your word says He healeth the broken in heart and bindeth up their wounds, and binding is slow work done in stages, and Your Spirit is the one doing it however You answer. I am sitting at a table that is not that one tonight, and I am staying for the whole meal.
