I Have Been Looking For A Document

This message is for spending years searching records and family papers for something with your name on it, because a feeling has never once counted as evidence to you, and you would like one piece of paper that settles where you belong

He has an account on three record sites and a box file of photocopies and he has been at this, on and off, for eleven years.

He tells people it is family history. It is genuinely interesting and he is genuinely interested and none of that is a lie.

And what he is actually doing is looking for a piece of paper with his name on it that settles something.

He worked that out in a county archive on a Wednesday, at a microfilm reader, when he found a marriage record that was almost what he wanted and not quite, and he heard himself say, out loud, in a silent room: come on.

Come on. That is not the sound a man makes about a hobby.

Because here is the shape of it, and he could describe it to you exactly if he ever told anybody.

He has a sense of where he belongs. He has had it a long time. And a sense is not evidence, and he is a man who does not believe things on the strength of how they feel, and he never has, about anything.

So he has been trying to convert a feeling into a document for eleven years. One line in a register. A name in the right column on the right page. Something that would let him say: there, look, that is what I am, it is written down.

And every time he finds something it is almost and not quite, and the almost is worse than nothing, because it keeps him at the reader for another year.

You know that box file.

Maybe yours is records. Maybe it is a letter you have been waiting for, or an old photograph you are trying to date, or a conversation with an elderly relative that you keep almost having. Maybe it is not documents at all, and it is simply that you have never once accepted your own inner sense of anything as sufficient.

There is nothing wrong with wanting evidence. It is not a spiritual failing to be a person who checks. Most of what is worth knowing has been found out by people who would not take a feeling for an answer.

I Have Been Looking For A Document

An engraving, on a body

Here is a line spoken to people who were absolutely certain they had been forgotten, and the form of the answer is the interesting part.

Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me.Isaiah 49:16

Graven. Not remembered. Not felt warmly about. Cut in.

That is a documentary word. It is the word for something inscribed on a hard surface, permanently, by hand, so that it cannot be revised or misfiled or lost in a fire in a records office in 1943.

And the surface named is a body. On the palms of my hands, which is to say the part you would see every time you did anything at all.

You are engraved on the palms of His hands, and that record was made before any archive on earth existed. That is what graven means in Isaiah 49:16, an inscription rather than a sentiment (Isaiah 49:16), and it is the Holy Spirit who is called the seal of the living God set upon a person, which is a documentary word too, and it is set by Him rather than searched out by you.

Your instinct was right and it was pointed the wrong way

Now here is what is worth taking home, and it is not that you should learn to trust your feelings.

You are correct that a feeling is not evidence. You have been right about that the whole time and no article should try to talk you out of it.

Where it has gone wrong is that you have been looking for the record in the wrong archive. You have been searching human paperwork for a fact that human paperwork was never asked to hold, and it does not hold it, and eleven years of almost is what that looks like from inside.

You have been searching for a real record in a place that never had it, and the record itself exists. Scripture says the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his (2 Timothy 2:19), and read the words foundation and seal, which are both documentary, and it is the Holy Spirit who bears witness with our spirit, which is testimony given rather than a feeling generated.

That distinction matters to a man like you. A witness is not a mood. A witness is somebody with knowledge giving evidence, and the New Testament describes the Spirit doing exactly that, in the second person, about you, continuously.

And nothing here says stop looking

Let me be plain, because I am not going to take a good thing off you.

Nothing here tells you to close the accounts or put the box file out. Family history is worth doing and you are good at it and the people you have found were real people who deserve to be found.

Nothing here tells you what to conclude about where you belong, either. That is not this site's to rule on and it never will be.

You are not being told to stop, and no conclusion is being handed to you about anything. The word says let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind (Romans 14:5), and it is the Holy Spirit who does that persuading, in His own way and over whatever time He takes.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it does not require you to accept a feeling.

Look at the hands.

Not your own. The record you have been trying to produce was already made, on a body, in the most permanent form there is, and it is described in exactly the terms you have been demanding: cut in, not felt; inscribed, not remembered.

You are written down, and the inscription is on hands rather than in a register that can burn. Scripture says behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands (Isaiah 49:16), and it is the Holy Spirit who gives the witness about it, which is testimony from somebody with knowledge and not an atmosphere you are being asked to trust.

And your eleven years were not a waste. You have been asking a real question and the question was right. The word says every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth (Matthew 7:8), and read the two verbs, and His Spirit is the one who leads a man into truth, which He has been doing at a microfilm reader for eleven years, patiently, while the man looked in the wrong drawer.

You will go back to the archive. Go. There is more to find and some of it will be wonderful.

You will just not be looking for the one thing that was never filed there.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing, palms open. The standing to speak this way is yours in Christ and it is not issued by any register in any county. Scripture is the ground under it, the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely documented, and what He shows you and when is His, however He answers.

  1. Eleven years of almost, you are the wrong archive and I am not looking for it there any more. The Word of God says behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of My hands, and graven is a word about cutting in and not about remembering. In the name of Jesus I look at the hands today.
  2. Rule in me that says a feeling is not evidence, you are right and you are being pointed properly for the first time. Scripture says the Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, and a witness is somebody with knowledge giving testimony and not a mood I am being asked to trust. The Holy Spirit has been giving evidence about me the whole time.
  3. Father, I have been trying to convert a sense into a document for eleven years and every record was almost and not quite. Your word says the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, the Lord knoweth them that are His, and Your Spirit is the seal set on a person by You. My palms are open tonight and my name is cut in.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
