Indispensable Is Not The Same As Belonging

This message is for you have made yourself indispensable in both of your rooms because you are extremely good at that, and twelve years in you have realized that being needed and being one of them are two different things and you have only ever bought the first

She got ill in February and was out for five weeks and that is how she found out.

Not because they managed badly without her, though they did, a bit. Because of what happened when she came back.

They were delighted. Genuinely, warmly delighted, in both rooms. Somebody had written a card. Two people said the place had not been the same. A man said, only half joking, do not do that again, we cannot cope.

And she went home from the first Sunday back and sat in the kitchen with her coat on and understood something she has been avoiding for twelve years.

They had missed what she does.

Every single sentence, all of them kind and all of them meant, had been about the doing. Nobody had said we missed you. They had said the place has not been the same, which is a sentence about a place.

And she knows better than to hold that against anybody. It is not a slight. It is simply that she has made herself, over twelve years, in two separate rooms, the person who does things, and that is what people know about her because it is what she has given them to know.

She is extremely good at this. That is the part she has never said out loud. She has always known how to become necessary. She did it at school, she did it at work, and she has done it in both of these rooms, and it works every single time.

It buys gratitude. Reliably, quickly, in any room on earth.

And it has never once bought what she was actually trying to buy, and in February she finally saw the receipt.

You know that kitchen.

Maybe you are the one who does the things. Maybe you have a role in each of your rooms and you have quietly noticed that the role is the reason you are there. Maybe you have wondered what would happen if you stopped, and then not wondered any further, because the answer was frightening.

There is nobody to blame in this. Nobody asked you to buy anything. You have been paying, for twelve years, into an account that nobody opened and nobody has been collecting from.

Indispensable Is Not The Same As Belonging

Where the standing came from

Here is a sentence that people quote about salvation, and it is also the plainest thing in the Bible about how anybody ends up belonging anywhere.

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.Ephesians 2:8-9

Not of works.

That phrase is doing something very specific. It is not saying works are bad; the very next verse says we were created unto good works. It is saying that works are not the currency in this transaction, because there is no transaction.

It is a gift. And the defining property of a gift is that no amount of work makes it more yours, and no amount of stopping makes it less.

You are standing on a gift, and no amount of usefulness was ever going to buy what it already gave you. That is what not of works means in Ephesians 2:8-9, a statement about currency rather than about effort (Ephesians 2:8-9), and it is the Holy Spirit who is described as the seal and the earnest of it, put on a person by God rather than earned by them.

Why it works everywhere and never worked here

Now the practical part, because your strategy is not stupid and it deserves an honest account.

Making yourself necessary works. It works in every human institution because human institutions run on need, and a person who meets a need becomes valuable, and valuable is a real position and it comes with real warmth.

It just cannot produce the thing you have been after. Being needed is a statement about a room's requirements. Being one of them is a statement about a person's place. Those are different objects and no quantity of the first has ever converted into the second, in any room, for anybody.

You have not been failing at your strategy, and the strategy has been working perfectly at a thing you did not want. Scripture says God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labor of love, which ye have shewed toward his name (Hebrews 6:10), and it is the Holy Spirit who has been in twelve years of that work, which was genuinely love as well as being a bid, and both of those can be true at once.

And nothing here says stop serving

Let me be very plain, because a woman like you will hear an instruction in this and there is not one.

Nothing here tells you to step back, resign anything, test them by withdrawing, or stop doing what you do. That would be a different strategy aimed at the same thing, and you would be checking the room's reaction the whole time, and it would tell you nothing.

And nothing here promises that either room will one day say the sentence you have been buying. That is not this site's to promise.

You are not being handed a plan, and no test of anybody is being suggested here. The word says whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men (Colossians 3:23), and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that redirection real in a person, which changes who the work is addressed to without changing a single item on the rota.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it does not require you to change your rota.

You already have the thing. You have had it the whole twelve years.

You are already in, and the standing you have been paying for was given to you before you did one thing for anybody. Scripture says by grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God, not of works (Ephesians 2:8-9), and it is the Holy Spirit who bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God (Romans 8:16), which is the only mechanism that has ever delivered this to anybody.

And the doing can stay. You have been serving out of real love and it does not have to be dismantled, only re-addressed. The word says as to the Lord, and not unto men (Colossians 3:23), and His Spirit is the one who makes that switch inside a person, which is why the same tasks can stop being payments without a single one of them being dropped.

You will be back on the rota next week and you should be, and they will be glad, and somebody will say the place is not the same without you.

You will just not be reading it as a partial receipt.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing, doing nothing. The standing to speak this way is yours in Christ and it is not issued on the strength of what you carry for anybody. Scripture is the ground under it, the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely freeing, and what either room says and when is His, however He answers.

  1. Account I have paid into for twelve years, you were never opened and nobody has been collecting from you. The Word of God says by grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works. In the name of Jesus I stop paying today.
  2. Idea that being needed and being one of them are the same object, get out of this kitchen. Scripture says God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labor of love, and the Holy Spirit has been in every one of those twelve years, which was real love as well as a bid. My strategy was working perfectly at a thing I did not want.
  3. Father, they missed what I do and nobody said they missed me, and none of them meant a thing by it. Your word says whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not unto men, and Your Spirit is the one who makes that switch inside a person. I am standing still and doing nothing for a minute tonight, and I am already in.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
