All Fire And No Floor

This message is for you were handed the power and never the lineage, so the first time somebody asked you where any of this came from you had nothing to say and it shook you more than the question deserved

It was a woman at work, and she was not being unkind, and that is the whole reason it landed.

She had watched her for two years. She had seen her pray with a girl in the stairwell after the girl's mother died and she had seen what happened to that girl, and she had asked one question over a sandwich in a break room.

She said: where does that come from?

And she had meant it plainly. Not where do you get the confidence. Not what church. She meant, this thing you are doing, this thing I can see working, where did it come from, who had it before you.

And she opened her mouth and heard herself say, from God.

Which is true. Which is completely true and she is not sorry she said it. And she sat there afterward with a sandwich she had stopped eating, because she knew what she had done, which was answer a question about a river by pointing at the sky.

She has been in this eleven years. She has seen things she cannot explain to that woman without sounding like she is bragging. She has the fire.

And under the fire there is nothing. No floor. Ask her who had this before her and she can name her pastor and the woman who prayed for her in 2019 and after that it goes dark, and she has been quietly hoping nobody would ever ask.

You know that break room.

Maybe you can pray with power and cannot say where it came from. Maybe you were handed the gift and never the family, taught how to move in it and never told who moved in it first. Maybe somebody asked you once and you gave a true answer that you knew was thin, and it has stayed with you longer than it should have.

Nobody withheld this from you on purpose. That is not what happened. It is simply that fire travels faster than history, and it always has.

All Fire And No Floor

Watch what Peter did first

The most famous outbreak of this in the whole book has a crowd standing around it asking exactly her question. What is this. Where did it come from.

And the man who stands up to answer does something you would not expect from a man who has just been set on fire.

But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel.Acts 2:16

He reaches backward.

Not up. Backward. He does not say, God is doing a new thing. He does not describe the sensation, and he does not tell them how it felt, and he does not build a case out of what they can see happening in front of them.

He names a man who said it first, hundreds of years earlier, and then he quotes him at length, and the whole rest of that sermon is one long walk back through the family: Joel, then David, then the promise made to the fathers.

The very first sermon of the whole thing is a genealogy of the fire.

You are standing in something that was spoken long before it fell, and the floor under you is older than the flame on you. That is what this is that does in one sentence, tying what is happening now to what was said then (Acts 2:16), and it is the Holy Spirit Himself who arranged it that way, because He is the one who spoke it through Joel and the one who fell in that room, and He wanted both halves said out loud on the same morning.

Why fire without a floor gets tired

Here is the practical reason this matters, and it is not academic.

Fire that has no floor under it has to keep being fire in order to prove it is real. That is exhausting and you know it is exhausting, and if you have been at this eleven years you have already met the tiredness at least twice.

Because when the room is not moving, and nothing is happening, and you have prayed for a week and there is no evidence at all, a person with only the fire has nothing to stand on. All they have is the last time it burned.

A person with a floor has something else entirely. They have what was said, before they felt anything, by somebody who was dead long before they were born.

You have a word under your feet, and it does not go out when the room goes quiet. Scripture says for ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven (Psalm 119:89), and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a place to stand rather than a nice line, which is exactly what He was doing in Peter that morning.

And I will say the thing this house always says, plainly. Nothing here is telling you that your church left something out, or that anybody who taught you failed you. They handed you what they had and they handed it with both hands, and you would not have the fire at all if somebody had not.

You have been given something real, and what is being handed to you now is the ground it has been standing on the whole time. The word says every good gift and every perfect gift is from above (James 1:17), and the same Spirit who gave the gift is the one who has kept the record of where it came from, so that no one who carries it has to carry it as an orphan.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it is one sentence long and you already know it.

This is that.

Next time somebody asks you in a break room, you have three words and then a name. This is that, which was spoken by the prophet Joel. You do not have to become a historian to say that. You do not have to read anything before Sunday.

You are carrying something with a lineage, and you are not the first person to hold it. Scripture puts the beginning of the first sermon in a backward glance to a prophet (Acts 2:16), and it is the Holy Spirit who spoke it through that prophet centuries before He fell on anybody in that upper room, which means the fire and the floor have always had the same Author.

And when the room goes quiet, and it will go quiet, because rooms do, you will not be left standing on the last time it burned. You have a settled word under you, and it holds when nothing is happening. The word says the grass withereth, the flower fadeth, but the word of our God shall stand for ever (Isaiah 40:8), and His Spirit is the one who put those words in the mouth of a man who has been dead for two and a half thousand years and is still holding somebody up in a break room this week.

Same fire on Sunday. Same power in the stairwell. There is simply a floor under it now, and you can say where it came from without pointing at the sky.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, on your feet, in your own voice. The standing to speak this way is yours in Christ and it is not issued on the strength of what you can explain. Scripture is the ground under it, the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely historical, and what He does in the room and when is His, however He answers.

  1. Thin answer I gave in that break room, you do not get to sit on me any longer. The Word of God says this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel, so the first man to preach this started by naming who said it first. In the name of Jesus I have three words and a name, and I am not empty handed.
  2. Tiredness that comes from having to burn in order to prove this is real, get out. Scripture says forever, O Lord, Thy word is settled in heaven, and the Holy Spirit is the one who spoke it through a prophet before He ever fell on me. I am standing on a settled word and it holds when the room is quiet.
  3. Father, You gave me fire and I did not know there was a floor. Your word says the grass withers and the flower fades but the word of our God stands forever, and Your Spirit is the Author of both the saying and the falling. I am saying this is that out loud tonight, and I am naming the one who said it first.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
