Context Kills A Joke

This message is for you laugh at everybody's jokes and you have stopped telling your own, because yours need three sentences of setup and setup kills a joke, so you have quietly become the audience in every room you are in

He was at a table with eleven people last month and he laughed for two and a half hours and did not say one funny thing, and he was funny once.

Properly funny. That was the thing about him at twenty five. In the room he came up in he was the one people waited for, and there is a particular sound a table makes when it is waiting for somebody, and he used to get that sound.

He has not made a room laugh in about six years.

He knows exactly why and he has never told anybody, because it sounds like nothing.

His jokes need setup. Not because they are complicated. Because they run on things that everybody where he comes from knows without being told, and nobody at this table knows any of it, and so the joke needs three sentences before it can start.

And three sentences of setup kills a joke. Everybody knows that. By sentence two somebody is being polite, and by sentence three the table is waiting to be finished with, and the laugh at the end is the kind people give you for effort.

He did it maybe five times over the first two years. Then he stopped.

And what has grown in the six years since is a role. He is the one who laughs. He is a very good audience, he is warm, people like sitting near him, and he has become, functionally, a person who receives.

At that table last month he watched himself do it for two and a half hours and thought: I am the room's audience now, and I chose it, and nobody would believe me if I told them I used to be the other thing.

You know that table.

Maybe it is not jokes. Maybe it is stories, or a way of arguing, or the thing you were known for somewhere else. Maybe you are the listener now, everywhere, and you are good at it and everybody is glad of you.

Nobody sidelined you. That is what makes it so difficult to bring up. You are liked, you are included, you are invited to everything, and you have quietly stopped bringing the part of you that everybody in your first room loved.

Context Kills A Joke

The one sentence a body may not say

Here is a sentence in the body passage that reads as a prohibition, and it is worth noticing who it is aimed at.

And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.1 Corinthians 12:21

Cannot say.

Not: should not. Cannot. It is put as an impossibility rather than as a rule, which is a much stronger construction. A body is not able to be a body while one part disowns another.

And it is aimed at the parts that would be most likely to say it. The eye and the head, which is to say the parts with the most obvious standing.

That table has no standing to decide it has no need of what you carry. Neither do you, about yourself, which is the harder half of it, because you are the one who has been saying it.

You are needed in this body, and no part of it is permitted to say otherwise about you. That is what the impossibility in 1 Corinthians 12:21 establishes (1 Corinthians 12:21), and it is the Holy Spirit who set the members in the body as it pleased Him, which is why nobody at any table, including you, has the authority to remove one.

What actually happened over six years

Now the mechanics, because it was not a decision and it is not a moral failure.

You tried five times. They landed badly, not because anybody was unkind but because the setup problem is real and you were right about it. And a person who tries five times and gets a polite laugh five times will stop, because that is what learning is.

So you learned accurately from real evidence, and the thing you learned was: this does not work here.

That is true about the jokes as you told them. It is not true about you, and the two got joined somewhere in year three.

You have not been rejected by anybody, and what you learned was a fact about material rather than a fact about yourself. Scripture says a man's gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men (Proverbs 18:16), and it is the Holy Spirit who divides those gifts severally as He wills, which means what you carry was not issued for one room only.

And nothing here says perform

Let me be plain, because there is a version of this article that would send a man to a dinner party determined to be funny, and that is a horrible outcome for everybody.

Nothing here tells you to be the entertainment, to reclaim a role, to prove anything, or to make a table wait for you. And nothing here says being a good audience is a lesser thing. Some of the best people in any room are the ones who listen, and you are genuinely one of them and that is not a consolation.

You are not being handed a performance, and nothing about your standing in that room depends on anybody laughing. The word says let nothing be done through strife or vainglory (Philippians 2:3), and it is the Holy Spirit who keeps a person from turning a recovery into a display, which is the actual risk in this territory.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it is one joke and the setup included.

Tell one. This week. With the three sentences.

Do not shorten it and do not apologize for the length and do not do the thing you always do, which is bail out halfway through and turn it into a comment about something else.

You are one with these people and you were never asked to be identical to them, and a joke that needs context is not a joke that failed. Scripture says the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee (1 Corinthians 12:21), and it is the Holy Spirit who set every member in place, which means what you carry belongs at that table whether or not that table has learned it yet.

And it may land flat again. You have permission for it to go badly, and a flat joke is not evidence about a person. The word says a merry heart doeth good like a medicine (Proverbs 17:22), and read where the merry heart is located, which is in the person and not in the room's reaction, and His Spirit produces joy as fruit rather than as a result somebody has to obtain.

You will be a good audience again next month and you should be, because you are and they need one.

There will just have been one evening where the table waited for you.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in your own kitchen, in your own voice. The standing to speak this way is yours in Christ and it is not issued by any table. Scripture is the ground under it, the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely cheering, and what any room makes of it and when is His, however He answers.

  1. Role I fell into somewhere in year three, you are not the whole of what I am for and you do not get another six years. The Word of God says the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee, and cannot is a stronger word than should not. In the name of Jesus I tell one whole thing this week.
  2. Lesson I learned from five polite laughs, get out. Scripture says a man's gift maketh room for him, and the Holy Spirit divides those gifts severally as He wills, so what I carry was never issued for one room only. What I learned was a fact about material and not a fact about me.
  3. Father, I laughed for two and a half hours at that table and did not say one funny thing. Your word says He set the members every one of them in the body as it hath pleased Him, and Your Spirit is the one who did the setting. I am telling one whole thing this week, setup and all, and I am not bailing out halfway.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
