I Could Not Do It And They Were Kind

This message is for you were asked to make a public commitment in one of your rooms and you could not go through with it, and everybody was gracious about it, and you have felt provisional in every room you stand in since

Four years ago, in a good building, on a good evening, he stayed in his seat, and he has not been the same in a room since.

He wants it said plainly that nobody did anything wrong.

He had been going a long time. He was known there. And there came a point where the natural next thing was a public step, the kind that room takes, and he had said yes to it, and it was arranged, and there was a date.

And on the night he sat in a chair with his hands on his knees and could not get up.

Not doubt. He would tell you that and he would mean it. It was not that he did not believe. It was something else that he has never found a good word for, something to do with the fact that standing up in that room, in that way, felt like it would be answering a question about which of his two rooms he actually was, and he could not answer that question with his body when he had never been able to answer it with his mouth.

So he sat. And afterward a man put a hand on his shoulder and said, whenever you are ready, and meant it, and nobody has ever mentioned it since.

They were kind. Everybody was kind. He wants that on the record twice.

And for four years he has been provisional. That is the only word. In that room and in the other one, and in his own kitchen, there is a small permanent sense that he is somebody whose position has not been finalized.

He said to himself out in the yard: I did not fail a test. There was no test. And I have been carrying a result ever since.

You know that chair.

Maybe you stayed seated once. Maybe you went forward and it settled nothing, which is its own version of this. Maybe there is a step in one of your rooms that you keep circling and have never taken, and everybody has been gracious about it for years, and the graciousness has somehow made it worse.

Nobody has judged you. And you have been carrying a verdict anyway, and it is worth knowing that a verdict nobody issued is still a verdict as far as a person's body is concerned.

I Could Not Do It And They Were Kind

The seal and where it is

Here is a sentence about a foundation, and the thing that makes it useful is where it puts the mark.

Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his.2 Timothy 2:19

The seal is on the foundation, not on the person.

Read it again, because it goes past most people. The foundation stands sure. And the seal it carries, the thing stamped on it, is a sentence about God's knowledge: the Lord knoweth them that are his.

So the mark of belonging is not something visible on you. It is something known by Him. It is in His knowing, and it was placed there by Him, and there is no version of this in which a man's body has to perform it in a room for it to be true.

You are sealed by somebody who knows His own, and the seal does not depend on a step you did not take. That is where 2 Timothy 2:19 puts the mark, in His knowledge and on His foundation (2 Timothy 2:19), and it is the Holy Spirit who is described as the one who seals a person, which is a work done to somebody rather than a work performed by them.

And this page will not tell you to take the step

Now let me be extremely plain, because this is the exact moment where an article would push a man out of a chair, and it is not going to.

Nothing here tells you to go through with it. Nothing here tells you not to. This site does not know that room, does not know what the step means there, and does not adjudicate what any community holds about it, in any direction.

If a day comes when you get up, that will be between you and God and it will not be because a page talked you into it. If it never comes, this site is not going to be the thing that told you it should have.

You are not being pushed anywhere, and nothing about your standing is waiting on your legs. The word says let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind (Romans 14:5), and it is the Holy Spirit who does that persuading, over years if He likes, and He is not in a hurry and He was not disappointed on the night.

What the graciousness did

Here is the thing that has actually been working on you for four years, and it is not the sitting down.

They were kind. Genuinely, and without an edge, and nobody has raised it since.

And kindness with no follow up leaves a man with nothing to push against. If somebody had been sharp with you, you would have had something to answer. What you got instead was a hand on the shoulder and a permanent silence, and a silence is a space, and a man will fill a space with the worst available reading of himself.

You have not been quietly filed as unfinished by anybody, and the silence in that room was courtesy rather than a verdict. Scripture says the LORD looketh on the heart (1 Samuel 16:7), and it is the Holy Spirit who searches there, and He has not been keeping a record of a man who stayed in a chair on one evening four years ago.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it does not involve getting out of any chair.

The step was never what was going to settle it.

That is worth reading twice, because it is what has kept you circling. You have believed, without ever quite saying it, that if you had stood up that night you would now be finished, resolved, in, and no longer provisional in any room.

You would not. Plenty of people took that step and are as unsettled as you are, and you know two of them.

You are settled by something that does not run through your legs, and the provisionality was never being decided in that building. Scripture says the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, the Lord knoweth them that are his (2 Timothy 2:19), and it is the Holy Spirit who bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God (Romans 8:16), which is a witness given inside a person and not in front of a congregation.

And the four years are not wasted. You have been held the whole time you have felt provisional. The word says he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ (Philippians 1:6), and read who is doing the performing, and His Spirit has been at that work in a man in a yard who thought he was on hold.

You may get up one day. You may not. Nobody on this page knows and nobody on this page is asking.

You will just not be carrying a result from a test that was never set.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing, out in your own yard. The standing to speak this way is yours in Christ and it is not issued by a step in any building. Scripture is the ground under it, the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely kind, and what He does about that room and when is His, however He answers.

  1. Result I have carried four years, get out of this yard. The Word of God says the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, the Lord knoweth them that are His, and the seal is on the foundation and not on a man. In the name of Jesus I put the result down today.
  2. Asterisk I put beside my own name on that evening, you were never anybody else's and you are not staying beside mine. Scripture says the Lord looketh on the heart, and the Holy Spirit is the one who searches there, and He was not keeping a record of a man who stayed in a chair. Nobody filed me as unfinished.
  3. Father, they were kind and the kindness left a silence and I filled it with the worst reading of myself. Your word says He which hath begun a good work in me will perform it, and Your Spirit has been at that work for the whole four years I thought I was on hold. I am standing up in my own yard tonight with no question in the room.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
