Liked Everywhere And Asked Nowhere

This message is for being visible and genuinely liked in both of your rooms and never once being in the room where things are actually decided in either of them, and having noticed that, and having nowhere to say it

She noticed it because of a photograph, which is a stupid way to notice anything and it is what happened.

Somebody had put up a picture from an anniversary thing, one of those long lens ones from the back of a hall, and she was in it, obviously, near the middle, laughing, with people either side of her.

And underneath somebody had listed the people at the front, the ones who had been part of putting it together, and she read the list twice.

She has been in that place eleven years. She is asked to do things constantly and she says yes to most of them. She is in every photograph. If you asked anybody in that building whether she belongs there they would think it was a strange question.

And there is a small group of people who decide things, in every organization there ever was, and she has never once been in it.

It is the same in the other room. Different people, same shape. Warmly welcomed, genuinely liked, absolutely central to the life of the place, and outside the thing at the middle.

And she has never said a word about this to anybody, because there is no way to say it that does not sound like a woman complaining about not being important, and she is not that and she would rather die than seem like it.

So she carries it. And what it does, over eleven years, is not resentment. It is quieter and worse.

It is a question that comes at about eleven at night: am I actually in this, or am I just very welcome here?

You know that photograph.

Maybe you are the one who is asked and never consulted. Maybe you have been on the edge of two things for so long that you have stopped noticing you are never at the middle of either. Maybe you tried to raise it once and heard yourself and stopped.

Nobody has excluded you. That is what makes it so hard to name. Groups form around who was there first, and who knows whom, and a hundred small histories, and none of it is a decision about you, and the effect on a person standing between two of them is real anyway.

Where the accepting happens

Here is a sentence written by a man describing a meeting with the most important people in the movement, and the aside in the middle of it is extraordinary.

But of these who seemed to be somewhat, whatsoever they were, it maketh no matter to me: God accepteth no man's person.Galatians 2:6

Whatsoever they were, it maketh no matter to me.

He is talking about the actual inner circle. The people who had been there from the beginning, who had walked with Jesus, who were in every sense at the middle of it.

And he says: God accepteth no man's person.

That phrase means God does not receive people according to their standing, their rank, their face, their place at a table. It is a statement about the mechanism of acceptance, and it removes every table on earth from the process.

You are accepted by the one who accepts no man's person, and that was never going to be decided at a table. That is what Galatians 2:6 says about the mechanism (Galatians 2:6), and it is the Holy Spirit who bears witness with a person's own spirit about where they stand, which is a channel that runs nowhere near a planning group.

This is not a page about being overlooked

Let me be very careful here, because there is a version of this article that would make you bitter and it is not going to be written.

Nothing here says either room has wronged you. They have not. A group of people who have known each other for twenty years will keep deciding things among themselves, and that is not a rejection of anybody, it is what proximity does over time.

And nothing here suggests you should raise it, angle for it, be added to anything, or read a slight into eleven years of genuine welcome.

You have not been slighted, and there is nobody in either room who owes you a place at anything. Scripture says charity thinketh no evil, is not easily provoked (1 Corinthians 13:5), and it is the Holy Spirit who produces that in a person, and He has been producing it in you for eleven years, which is why you have never once said a word.

And nothing here promises that either room will one day put you at the middle. That is not this site's to promise. They may. They may not.

What the eleven o'clock question is actually asking

Here is the useful part.

The question that arrives at night is not: am I important. You have tested that and it is not it, and that is why calling it vanity has never made it go away.

The question is: is my standing here real, or is it hospitality?

And that is a serious question and it deserves a serious answer, and the answer is not going to come from a photograph caption.

You are held by somebody who does not run an inner circle, and your standing was settled before either room existed. The word says ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, and to the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven (Hebrews 12:22-23), and read where the register is kept, and it is His Spirit who is the earnest of that inheritance, put down in advance on something already assigned.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it does not require anybody to add you to anything.

Stop taking the question to either room.

You have been asking two committees, silently, for eleven years, and they have not answered because it is not a question either of them has ever been able to hear, let alone answer.

You are in this, and the deciding about you happened somewhere that has no committee. Scripture says God accepteth no man's person (Galatians 2:6), and it is the Holy Spirit who bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God (Romans 8:16), which is the only channel by which any human being has ever known where they stand.

And keep saying yes. You have been serving out of love and not out of an application, and none of that was a bid for anything. The word says whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men (Colossians 3:23), and read the last four words, and His Spirit is the one who has kept eleven years of yes from turning into eleven years of angling, which is a real work and not a small one.

There will be another photograph and another caption and you will be in the middle of the picture and not on the list.

You will just have stopped reading the caption for an answer about yourself.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, standing, in your own voice. The standing to speak this way is yours in Christ and it is not issued by any group in any building. Scripture is the ground under it, the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely fair, and what either room does and when is His, however He answers.

  1. Question that arrives at eleven at night, you have been going to two committees that cannot hear you and you are being redirected. The Word of God says God accepteth no man's person, which removes every table on earth from the process. In the name of Jesus I stop asking a caption today.
  2. Suspicion that eleven years of welcome has been hospitality rather than standing, get out. Scripture says ye are come to the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and the Holy Spirit is the earnest of that, put down in advance. The register is not kept in either of those buildings.
  3. Father, I am in every photograph and I have never once been in the room where it gets decided, and nobody has wronged me. Your word says whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not unto men, and Your Spirit is the one who has kept eleven years of yes from becoming eleven years of angling. I am standing still tonight and saying it to nobody.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
