Her sister gave her a coat and she did not sleep well for four nights.
That is the whole of it. A good coat, warm, given kindly, in a winter where she needed one. And she said thank you properly and she wore it and she loved it.
And every time she put it on she did the arithmetic. What she could give back. What was coming up that she could get her sister. Whether she could take her out for something. Not with resentment. With a kind of low urgency, like a bill that keeps arriving.
She is fifty three. She has done this her entire life and she knows she does it. Her mother did it. It was survival once, in a family and a place where an unrepaid thing could turn into a hold somebody had over you, and it was wisdom then, and it has outlived the situation it was wise in.
And she was in church on a Sunday, singing a line about grace, and she heard herself sing it, and she thought about the coat.
And she thought: I have been doing it to God for thirty years.
Every prayer answered has an entry. Every good week has a matching column. Not out loud. Not consciously. Just a low permanent hum of what she owes and how far behind she is, and behind that, further down, the reason it never stops.
You cannot be at rest in a house where you owe rent.
You know that hum.
Maybe you serve because you are grateful and also because you are settling something. Maybe you cannot let anybody buy you lunch. Maybe you have never once received a compliment without immediately handing one back, and you have called that being polite for so long that you have never looked underneath it.
Nobody put that in you cruelly. It came from somewhere sensible. Most of the things that grip us hardest arrived as good sense in a situation that has since ended.
The question nobody can answer
At the end of the chapter about the root and the branches, after all the argument is finished, the writer stops arguing and asks three questions in a row, and the last one closes an account.
Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.Romans 11:35-36
Who ever gave to Him first.
Sit with the shape of that. Repayment only works between parties who can both put something in. A person can repay a sister, because a sister can receive a coat. Repayment requires two hands that both hold.
And the question is: what did you ever put in first, that He would owe you a return on it.
The answer is nothing, and the answer being nothing is the good news rather than the bad. If you never gave first, there is no account. Not a forgiven account. No account. Nothing was ever opened.
You are on a root you cannot repay, and there was never a ledger with your name at the top of it. That is what the question at the end of the chapter does, closing the possibility of repayment by asking who ever put in first (Romans 11:35), and it is the Holy Spirit who gives without price, described everywhere as poured out and given and shed abroad, which are all words for something moving one way.
A branch has never repaid a root in the history of the world
Go back to the picture, because it settles this in about four seconds.
Sap goes up. That is the direction. It has always been the direction, in every tree that has ever grown anywhere.
A branch does not send anything down. It does not owe the root and it does not pay the root and the root is not waiting. The branch is a place where what comes up arrives and becomes something, and the fruit does not go back into the ground as a payment. It gets eaten by somebody else entirely.
You have been placed on the receiving end of a one way arrangement, and the fruit that comes off you is not a repayment either. Scripture says thou bearest not the root, but the root thee (Romans 11:18), and it is the Holy Spirit who is the sap in the picture, and nobody has ever been asked to send Him back up.
And the good you do is not settling anything. That is worth hearing twice, because the hum will try to make even this page into a payment. You have been serving out of love and the love was not an installment. The word says freely ye have received, freely give (Matthew 10:8), and notice both halves are the same word, and it is His Spirit who gives freely into a person so that the giving out of them can be free too.
This is not a page against gratitude
Let me say the obvious thing, because you are careful and you will have thought of it.
Nothing here is telling you to stop thanking people, or to receive the coat carelessly, or that generosity back to your sister is somehow suspect. Buy her the thing. Take her out. It is good and it is warm and it is not what is being talked about.
The difference is not what you do. It is whether you are at rest while you do it, and you know exactly which one you have been.
You are free to be generous without being in debt, and the two have never had to travel together. The word says freely ye have received, freely give (Matthew 10:8), and both halves of that line use the same word, and it is the Holy Spirit who gives freely into a person so that the giving out of them can be free too.
Here is the turn, and it is a subtraction rather than an addition.
You are not being asked to pay better, or faster, or to feel more grateful, or to work on your gratitude until the hum quiets down. That is the same machine in a different color.
You are being told there is no account.
You are not behind, and you cannot fall behind on a thing that was never issued. Scripture asks who hath first given to Him, that it should be recompensed unto him again (Romans 11:35), and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that question rest a person rather than merely humble them, which is the difference between hearing a fact and being freed by one.
And you are allowed to enjoy the coat. You have been given something outright, and outright means it is finished and not pending. The word says the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 6:23), and a gift is named a gift in that sentence on purpose, and His Spirit is called the earnest, the first installment on something already bought, paid by Him and not by you.
Wear it. Wear it without doing the arithmetic. That is the whole assignment.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, hands open, in your own voice. The standing to speak this way is yours in Christ and it is not issued on the strength of what you have given back. Scripture is the ground under it, the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely tidy, and what He does with the hum and when is His, however He answers.
- Account I have run for thirty years, you are closed and you were never opened. The Word of God asks who hath first given to Him that it should be recompensed unto him again, and the answer is nobody, ever, in the history of the world. In the name of Jesus I stop doing the arithmetic today.
- Low urgency that arrives every time somebody is kind to me, get out of this house. Scripture says freely ye have received, freely give, and both halves of that sentence are the same word, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gives freely into a person. I am not behind and I cannot fall behind on a bill that was never issued.
- Father, a branch has never once repaid a root in the history of the world and I have been trying it for thirty years. Your word says the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord, and Your Spirit is the earnest of something already bought and already paid. My hands are open on my knees tonight, and I am going to wear the coat.
