Round A Family MealJoel 1:3

The Generation Where It Stops

This message is for the elders in your family carried this at their table in a language and a manner you did not inherit, and you have come to believe you are the generation where it stops, because you cannot reproduce what they did

He is forty and he is the eldest now, which happened in one afternoon, and he has been quietly panicking about it since June.

His grandmother did something at that table. He could not tell you what it was called. She would say something before people ate, in a language he understands about half of, in a particular rhythm, and every person there would go quiet for it without anybody being asked, and then the noise would come straight back.

It took eleven seconds. He has timed it in his head.

And she is gone, and his mother is not well, and last month there were fourteen people in his house looking at the food, and there was a pause, and he understood, in that pause, that they were all waiting for him.

He said something like: right, let us eat. And everybody did, and it was fine, and nothing was wrong.

And he stood there afterward feeling like a man who had let something enormous fall on a floor.

Because he cannot do it. He does not have the language properly, he does not know the words, he would get the rhythm wrong, and doing it badly seemed worse than not doing it at all.

So he did not.

And the thought that has been with him since June is that he is the join where a long thing comes apart. Four generations behind him did that, and after him nobody will, and it will be nobody's fault and it will be his.

You know that pause.

Maybe your elders prayed in a way you cannot. Maybe there was a song, or a blessing, or a form of words in a language you half have. Maybe there is nothing formal at all and simply a way your grandfather was at a table that you have never managed to be.

There is nobody to blame here. Nobody withheld it. It usually goes because a family moves, or a language thins by one generation at a time, or because a child at nine did not know they were supposed to be memorizing anything.

The Generation Where It Stops

Read what is actually asked

Here is a line from Joel, and it is one of the plainest instructions about handing something down in the whole book.

Tell ye your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and their children another generation.Joel 1:3

Tell.

That is the verb. Not perform. Not preserve. Not reproduce accurately, not keep the form, not maintain a practice, not pass on the wording.

Tell your children of it. Speak about the thing. That is the entire instruction, and it is repeated down three generations in one sentence, and it never once becomes anything more demanding than telling.

You have been given a telling to do, and reproducing what she did was never the assignment. That is what the verb in Joel 1:3 asks for, three generations of telling and nothing more technical (Joel 1:3), and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a told thing live in the next person, which is not a job that has ever depended on getting a form of words right.

And nothing here prescribes anything

Let me be plain, because this is the exact place a page could hand you a practice and make everything worse.

Nothing here tells you to learn the language, or to find out what she said, or to institute anything at that table, or to say words before food, or not to. No form is being handed over in any direction, and no observance is being called binding or optional, because that is not this site's business and it never will be.

You are not being handed a practice, and nothing about your standing depends on what happens before the food at your house. The word says the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost (Romans 14:17), and His Spirit is named right there in the middle of it, and He is not sitting at your table with a checklist.

If you do want to learn the words, learn them. That would be lovely and it is yours to choose. It is not a debt.

What actually got handed to you

Here is the part he had not noticed, and it is the reason he could time eleven seconds in his head.

He remembers it. Precisely. The rhythm, the going quiet, the noise coming back, the fact that nobody had to be asked. He can describe that room to you at forty years old with his eyes closed.

Which means the thing got in. It is in him. It did not come in as a script, it came in as a memory of a room, and a memory of a room is a completely legitimate thing to hand on.

You are carrying it already, and it arrived in you as a picture rather than as a text. Scripture says only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen (Deuteronomy 4:9), and notice what is to be kept, the things the eyes have seen, and it is the Holy Spirit who is the one who brings all things to remembrance, which He has plainly been doing in a man who can still time his grandmother.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it does not require you to learn a single word of anything.

Tell somebody about her.

Not at a moment. Not as a speech at a table. Sideways, in a car, over the washing up, to one person. One thing you remember about an elder in your family at a table. The eleven seconds. The going quiet. The noise coming back.

You are the one who tells it, and telling is the whole of what the verse asks. Scripture says tell ye your children of it, and let your children tell their children (Joel 1:3), and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a told thing live in somebody, which is why the chain has never once depended on any generation being able to do what the last one did.

And you did not drop anything in June. You have not broken a chain, and the pause at that table was not the sound of something ending. The word says his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation (Luke 1:50), and read who is doing the carrying across the generations in that sentence, and it is His Spirit who has been the one continuous thing running from her table to yours.

Fourteen people will be in your house again. There may be another pause.

You will just be a man with something to tell rather than a form to reproduce.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in your own kitchen, in your own voice. The standing to speak this way is yours in Christ and it does not depend on any words you inherited. Scripture is the ground under it, the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely comforting, and what He does in the next generation and when is His, however He answers.

  1. Thought that I am the join where a long thing comes apart, you are not true and you do not get another summer of me. The Word of God says tell ye your children of it, and let your children tell their children, and the verb in that sentence is tell. In the name of Jesus I stop grieving a form I never had.
  2. Shame from a pause at my own table in June, get out of this house. Scripture says His mercy is on them that fear Him from generation to generation, and the Holy Spirit is the one continuous thing running from her table to mine. I did not drop anything and no chain was broken in this kitchen.
  3. Father, she did something in eleven seconds that I cannot reproduce and I can still time it with my eyes shut. Your word says take heed lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and Your Spirit is the one who brings all things to remembrance. I am telling one person one thing about her this week, and I am not putting a lesson on the end of it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
