She has two settings and she can move between them without thinking, and she found out last winter what the second one costs.
In one room, what she carries is normal. She prays for people out loud and things happen and nobody in that building thinks it is remarkable, and when she is there she is entirely herself and completely unremarkable, which is the best feeling she knows.
In the other room, which she is also in, and which she loves, and where she has friends of twenty years, the same thing is welcome in principle and awkward in practice.
Nobody has ever asked her to stop. That is important and she says it whenever she tells anybody, which is almost never. Nobody has said a word. It is more that she watched the temperature of a room change once, years ago, and she has been managing that temperature ever since without being asked.
So she has a smaller version. She uses fewer words. She does the same thing quietly, in a corridor, one to one, afterward. She calls it wisdom, and some of it is.
And last winter a woman in that second room was in real trouble, and she did the smaller version, and it was fine, and the woman was helped, and afterward in her car she sat there and thought: I do not know what the full size of this is any more.
Not whether it works. She knows it works. She does not know what it looks like when it is not being adjusted for anybody, because she has not seen that in about eleven years.
You know that car.
Maybe yours is not prayer. Maybe it is a way of speaking, or a boldness, or a tenderness, or a thing you can see about people that one room welcomes and the other finds intense. Maybe you have been dialing something up and down for so long that you would struggle to say what the middle setting was.
And there is no villain here. The second room is not wrong for having a temperature, and she is not wrong for having noticed it. Two rooms that do a thing differently are not a right room and a wrong room, and this page will never tell you which is which.

Whose thing is it
Here is a sentence about gifts, and the whole weight of it is in one word.
As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.1 Peter 4:10
Stewards.
A steward does not own the thing. That is the definition, and it is the relief in this verse rather than the demand. A steward handles what belongs to somebody else, according to that person's intentions, and is answerable to them and not to the household's opinion of the arrangement.
Which means the size of what you carry was never yours to set, in either direction.
You are a steward of something you did not issue, and the dimensions of it were fixed by the one who handed it over. That is what steward means in the sentence it appears in, and it is set against the manifold grace of God, which is a phrase meaning many colored (1 Peter 4:10), and it is the Holy Spirit who divides to every man severally as He wills, which puts both the giving and the sizing in the same hand and not in a room.
And read what the verse asks you to do with it. Minister the same one to another. The same. Not a version, not a portion adjusted to the audience.
But wisdom is real and this page is not against it
Now let me be careful, because there is a way of reading the last paragraph that would send somebody into a room to make a point, and that would be a bad outcome and not a brave one.
There is such a thing as knowing your room. Paul changed how he spoke depending on who he was with and said so plainly, and no one has ever accused him of shrinking. Speaking to a person in a way they can receive is love, not cowardice, and the corridor and the one to one afterward may be exactly right for that room and that woman.
The question is not the volume. It is who is setting it.
You have not been sinning by being gentle, and adjusting how a thing is delivered is not the same as disowning it. Scripture says I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some (1 Corinthians 9:22), and it is the Holy Spirit who gives that kind of read on a room, which is a gift in itself and not a compromise.
What has gone wrong is smaller and more specific. Somewhere in eleven years the adjusting stopped being a choice you make and became a reflex you obey, and a reflex has no author, which is why you could not find the middle setting in your car.
Here is the turn, and it does not happen in either room.
Find out the size of it on your own.
Not in the second room, and not to prove anything to anybody, and not as a stand. Alone. In a car, in a kitchen, in a field, wherever you can be unobserved, do the full sized version of the thing you carry, once, with nobody there to be managed.
You are allowed to know the actual dimensions of what you were given, and finding them out is not a performance. Scripture says as every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God (1 Peter 4:10), and it is the Holy Spirit who is both the giver and the one who tells a steward how to handle a thing, which He does directly and not through the temperature of a room.
And then go on being wise in the rooms. You have been given both the gift and the sense to handle it, and neither of those is in competition with the other. The word says God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7), and all three of those arrive together in that sentence, from His Spirit, which is why the choice was never between being bold and being careful.
Same two rooms next week. Same corridor afterward, most likely.
You will just know what you are carrying while you carry it.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, hands open, in your own voice. The standing to speak this way is yours in Christ and it is not issued by any room you stand in. Scripture is the ground under it, the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely freeing, and what He does in either room and when is His, however He answers.
- Reflex that sets my size at every door, you are not my steward and you do not get to decide any more. The Word of God says minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God, and a steward does not own the thing he handles. In the name of Jesus I take my hand off the dial today.
- Shame that came off one room turning round when I was nineteen, get out. Scripture says God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind, and the Holy Spirit brings all three of those in the same sentence. I was never choosing between being bold and being careful.
- Father, I have been adjusting this for eleven years and I cannot find its actual shape. Your word puts both the giving and the sizing in Your hand, and Your Spirit divides to every man severally as He wills. My hands are wide open tonight, and I am going to find out what You handed me.
