The Daily Administration Of Being Two Things

This message is for a plain flat exhaustion from the daily administration of being two things at once, which is the word you would use if somebody asked, and which nobody has ever asked about because it does not look like anything

She was asked at a routine appointment, the way they ask, and she nearly said it.

The nurse said: any changes, how are you in yourself?

And what came up her throat was: I am so tired I cannot describe it to you, and I have no reason, and I have been like this for about six years.

What she actually said was, fine, busy, you know.

And in the car she thought about the word she had swallowed, which was not tired. The word she had nearly used was administration.

Because that is what it is. It is not grief and it is not illness and it is not overwork in any sense anybody would recognize, because her job is fine and she sleeps eight hours and she has no small children.

It is the running total. It is knowing, all day, every day, without a break, which room she is in and what that room knows about her and what it does not. It is remembering who has been told which thing. It is the second and a half of adjustment at every threshold, times about nine thresholds a day, times six years.

None of that shows up anywhere. There is no event. You cannot say to a nurse, I have been maintaining two versions of a life since 2020 and it turns out that is a job.

You know this tiredness.

Maybe you have tried to describe it once and heard how it sounded and stopped. Maybe you have been told you should get your iron checked. Maybe you have looked at your own life on paper, which is a good life with no crisis in it, and concluded that you must simply be a person who is tired, and made your peace with that.

Nobody is doing this to you. That is what makes it so hard to name. There is no oppressor in the story, just a load that nobody can see, including sometimes you.

The Daily Administration Of Being Two Things

The invitation names the load

Here is an invitation, and the thing worth noticing first is who it is addressed to.

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.Matthew 11:28-29

All ye that labor and are heavy laden.

He does not specify the load. He does not list qualifying burdens, or say which kinds count, or ask anybody to demonstrate that what they are carrying is heavy enough to be admitted.

Heavy laden is a description of the person, not an assessment of the cargo.

You are one of the people this invitation was written to, and nothing about your load has to be visible to anybody for it to qualify. That is what all ye does in the sentence, refusing to filter (Matthew 11:28), and it is the Holy Spirit who is called the Comforter, the one who comes alongside, and He has never once asked a person to produce an event before He would come and stand beside them.

Why the invisible ones are the heaviest

Here is the mechanics of it, and knowing it helps more than sympathy does.

A visible load gets shared. People carry things for you, or ask about it, or at minimum know it is there, and even the knowing takes a portion of the weight because you are not also managing everybody's ignorance of it.

An invisible load gets carried twice. Once as itself, and once as the ongoing work of it not showing.

That is why yours is so heavy. You have not been maintaining two versions of a life. You have been maintaining two versions of a life plus the appearance of maintaining none.

You have been doing double work, and the second half of it is the part nobody has ever counted. Scripture says the LORD looketh on the heart (1 Samuel 16:7), which is the one place the second half of your work has ever been visible, and it is the Holy Spirit who searches the deep things, and He has been reading the whole ledger for six years including the columns you have never shown anybody.

Nothing here is asking you to explain yourself to anybody

I want to be plain about what is not being suggested.

Nothing here tells you to tell the nurse. Nothing here tells you to explain your life to any person in either room, or to simplify anything, or to make an announcement, or to stop doing what you have been doing.

You may have excellent reasons. This page does not know them and is not entitled to.

You are not under an obligation to make your load legible to anybody, and no part of your rest depends on being understood by people. The word says casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you (1 Peter 5:7), and notice where the casting goes, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that a real transfer rather than a phrase, which is the difference between being told to relax and actually putting something down.

The breakthrough

Here is the turn, and it is not a solution to your life.

Your rooms will still be two next week. The thresholds will still be there, all nine of them, and the administration does not stop because you read a page about it.

What changes is that the load is now named and there is somewhere to put it down.

You are carrying real work, and it has a place to be set that will actually hold it. Scripture says come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest (Matthew 11:28), and it is the Holy Spirit who makes the coming a real motion rather than an idea, which is why people who have never told a soul can be genuinely rested by it.

And the tiredness is not a fault in your character. You have not been failing at an ordinary life, and there was never a version of you that should have found this easy. The word says he giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength (Isaiah 40:29), and His Spirit is the one who does the increasing, on the exact days when there is no visible reason to be as tired as you are.

The nurse will ask again in a year. You can still say fine, busy, you know.

You will just not be the only one who knows what the real answer is.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, hands folded, in your own voice. The standing to speak this way is yours in Christ and it does not depend on anybody understanding your life. Scripture is the ground under it, the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely kind, and what He does with the two rooms and when is His, however He answers.

  1. Tiredness with no event attached to it, you are not a fault in my character and you are not going unnamed any longer. The Word of God says come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and heavy laden describes the person and not the cargo. In the name of Jesus I bring this to the one place it fits.
  2. Second half of my work that nobody has ever counted, get off my shoulders. Scripture says casting all your care upon Him, for He careth for you, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that an actual transfer instead of a phrase. I am not obliged to make this legible to anybody before I am allowed to put it down.
  3. Father, I nearly told a nurse the truth and I said fine, busy, you know. Your word says You give power to the faint and to them that have no might You increase strength, and Your Spirit has been reading the whole ledger for six years including the columns I never showed. My hands are folded tonight and I am sitting still for two minutes.
